A Travelogue of the Shikoku Henro Pilgrimage
*Earphones recommended*
Snapshots of our adventure together on the Shikoku Henro pilgrimage trail in April 2024.
Laura and I walked together until Zenjibuji Temple 32 (approx 350km) in Kochi before parting ways - she will continue on hoping to reach Temple 88 in mid-May! Follow her journey on Instagram @thequietplaceart
The Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, set on the picturesque island of Shikoku, encompasses 88 sacred temples and various sites historically tied to Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi), a revered monk from the 9th Century. This extensive trail spans 1,200 kilometers and is traditionally completed on foot over approximately 40-50 days.
Participants of this pilgrimage are driven by a myriad of reasons. Some seek spiritual solace, others crave adventure, and many, like us, pursue a period of deep self-reflection. The pilgrimage is inclusive, welcoming not only Japanese or Buddhists but anyone respectful of the local customs. You also do not have to complete the journey on foot or in one go. For me, the journey provided moments of 'yutori' - a sense of spaciousness and peace that allows one to savour life free from everyday constraints. Although I didn't finish the trail, walking over 350km in two weeks was a humbling experience and profound achievement, inspired greatly by Laura's companionship.
Shikoku is a relatively unknown part of Japan - it's the smallest and least developed of the main islands. However the people we encountered, be it the guesthouse owners, station attendants or random people giving us 'osettai' (free gifts for the journey), Shikoku folk have been kind AF. It's a side of Japan I've never experienced, and I hope to pick up the journey from where I left off someday! If you're considering this journey yourself I highly recommend you train, do a lot of research, join the 'Shikoku 88 Ohnero Pilgrimage' Facebook group and learn some basic Japanese. Ganbatte!
This entire journey was captured on the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, faithfully recording every step of our adventure.

This documentary follows their gigantic effort to save the large 'Tsui Wah' restaurant neon sign - one of the last few remaining large signs in the city. Hong Kong Neon Sign Preservation Project

Neon signs have long been an emblem of Hong Kong's unique visual culture. But due to government safety regulations set a few years ago, all signs that hang over streets are now deemed structurally "unsafe" and have forced many businesses to remove their own signs. This Tsui Wah restaurant neon sign is one of the biggest remaining signs in the city so the time came to spearhead a project to pres...

Kikuchi Hojudo is Japan’s oldest ironcasting company based in Yamagata prefecture. Forged in 1604 during the Edo Period, its craftsmen are famed for producing bespoke iron tea kettles - known as "tetsubin". These tea kettles are more than ordinary household tools however. They are vital elements part of the Japanese tea ceremony. It is believed that water boiled with iron kettles produce a much...

(Viewable in 4K) The wasabi plant is one of the world's most expensive vegetables, and also one of the most difficult to grow. Many people may not think that since wasabi paste is widely available in cheap sushi restaurants or grocery stores. But they may also not know that 99% of tube or powdered wasabi does not contain real wasabi - they are a mixture of horseradish, mustard and food colourin...
'The Spirit of Noh 能' - Oldest surviving form of theater in the world
Noh theater, or Nohgaku (能楽) is still being actively performed today with dedicated venues, academies and government support. Although it certainly is not the oldest form of theater per se, from generation to generation the precise continuation of performance skills, costumes, music and even the use of archaic Japanese has allowed Noh to remain close to its earliest forms. Whereas older Western...

‘The Art of Musk Melon’ - Expensive fruit of Japan
Pricing at least US$90 per fruit, the musk melon is one of the world's most expensive fruits. The musk melon in Japan has been sometimes called 'the king of fruit', and is often given as gifts - as is the common custom in the land of the rising sun. The musk melon can probably be seen as related to its more common variety of cantaloupe and honeydew. However, the musk melon is far more sweeter a...

The music selection is perfect for this. I lowkey love it. Kinda reminds me of the 'optimistic' or 'artisanal' side of IDM. I think of like... Plaid, Jon Hopkins, Benn Jordan, Ochre... artists like that.
Be happy, healthy and successful always
I would so love to learn this craft
I saw a Noh performance for the first time this year in Tokyo. It was a very special experience. I can’t wait to go again.
🙂
Great to see you again! I re-watched your Japanese Artisans series and showed it to some friends a few weeks back and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it
thanks for dropping by!
Great work!
all the comments capture my awe of detail, perfection, and heartfelt care and learning
making incense…what a master craftsman
Supreme❤
All my respect... I'm actually crafting handmade incense stick with a base of Tabu's wood. Just my hands, a little hand extruder that can only extracts one stick at a time. I'm working hard, creating my own perfumes, watching as many videos I can to learn more and more... Cross my fingers to open my e-shop of japanese handmade incense
With natural resources depleting, I see the incense business retiring also. I need to grow a sandalwood tree and whats that other one, agarwood. The sandalwood tree takes 60 yrs minimum to be used for incense.
Amazing.❤
Amazing.

Hi!
What this film said in 8minutes is worth 8 years of contemplation
Wow this is amazing
Excellent 🤌
Breathtaking stuff as usual!
I discovered and appreciated wasabi thanks to this video few years ago, thank you! I am soon visiting Japan and would like to get in contact with iriya manaka farm. Do you have any contact you can share? thank you
glad to hear that! i can't give personal info and i'm unsure if they cater to private visitors. However you can try to go through the Izu tourism site to gain access: www.city.izu.shizuoka.jp/
@@FalloutMediaHK thank you so much!
I love Noh❤
Hello thank you for your great video! Do you happen to have their website, I would love to buy a wazuku iron kettle!
sure it's www.wazuqu.jp/
While I do see how this is indeed sad, I also felt like it was overwhelmingly wholesome as well as beautiful. This man is fully aware that he is the last to run his families shop, yet he’s come to terms with it. There’s so much wisdom he holds. While it will be sad for this family business to end, there’s something extraordinary in knowing that no one will ever be able to recreate it perfectly. He is, quite literally, a master of his craft, and his work will live in his customers memories. You can’t trade that for anything.
I hope the craftsman is the film found his successor.
I am watching this film because I have had two beautiful iron Japanese works, a bowl and a platter, for many years. I found them in San Francisco, and one still had the label worded "Kikuchi Hojudo." The label looks very, very old--much older than UA-cam! So after all these years I thought to look up the maker on the internet, and I am so grateful I found this story! What the gentleman said is so true--a handmade artifact is a treasure; I will love these pieces as long as I live, and give them to my children. The iron has a soul that seems to glow.
I greatly admire Japanese craftsmen and craftsmanship. Whatever they do their dedication is amazing. Most of the world isn't ready to say goodbye to them 😢.
Japan is the only country in the world when you visit you feel like you are in another world
And strangely enough, as if you've time traveled to a past or future time at the same time.
My best friend, that's a great video. I will always cheer for you in Korea I'm looking forward to a great video. Have a nice day.
Dream job.
"Oldest surviving form of theater in the world" I guess 14th century theater is older than the theater of ancient Greece starting in 500 B.C
This is my Noh performance in Japan as a foreigner: ua-cam.com/video/lZFSInGI9ps/v-deo.html
Sad, as an incense fanatic this would have been my dream to learn this craft from experienced person like him. :'/
Then do it. In the video he says he started at 35. Learn the language and go for it. Nothing stopping you.
That mask of the female noble was breathtaking. You could see the lines of her hair, the pores of her skin, it’s obviously an ancient carving technique and style but it creates wonderfully lifelike characters.
Great work! Thank you for sharing!
Bushido, the way of the warrior Shokunin, the way of the craftsman
believe the test is look like other melon they just make things like that to sale it at high price
Beautifully made video. Rest In Peace. You did your ancestors proud 🙏🏻 I completely agree with him - we can’t let ourselves become complete robots. We need history and music and ART
its just mind blowing to see and hear the passion he has for his craft his products are truly beautiful when i eventually go to japan i plan on visiting his shop to say just that but just watching his work and how much time and energy he puts in is incredible
Isn't Pansari equally old?
What is with this stupid music in the background. This music has nothing to do with Noh.
Always wanted to know what "yoooo" means in Noh.
The UA-cam channel below has to be one of the most unique, most varied and most beautiful food & cooking, fruits and vegetables and country lifestyle living channels around. The episode in the link also focuses on the use of Wasabi. Hope that everyone will enjoy this nice and interesting clip. ua-cam.com/video/4LERTDRxGTY/v-deo.html Many happy greetings from Tasmania ..... (。◕‿◕。)
Beautiful ❤️👍
i would love to work with him and teach me this wonderful work
um,... to me,... I enjoy Noh so much,... but also, it's fun to watch some of the audience fall asleep during the performance! (^_^) ... maybe they are enjoying Noh in their dreams !
Second time I have seen this - good to know such skill, and love for a craft, still exists.
I watch this at least once a year. It’s amazing. Great work. I love the look soooo much. All your work actually.
